A guide to auxiliary inputs (Aux-In)

Connect your iPod, iPhone or mp3 player to your car or home stereo via the Aux-In.

An auxiliary input, or Aux-In is a socket that allows you to connect a music player to your stereo, whether it be in your car or at home. There are two different types of these inputs, if you have either fitted then then simple guide will tell you how to play your music through your stereo speakers!

3.5mm Aux Input

These inputs are the same size as standard headphone sockets. They are fitted to many more recent car models as standard allowing you to listen to your iPod, mp3 player or phone through your car stereo. In most vehicles they are located in the stereo unit, centre console, glovebox or armrest of the car. To the right you can see an aux input from a BMW 5 series located in the rear centre console.

The inputs are also found on some home stereos (although don't confuse them with the actual headphone socket). An example from a Pure Evoke stereo is shown to the right.

If you have either of these inputs you can connect your music devices using one of our 3.5mm Aux Input Cables.

RCA (R/L) Aux Input

These come as a pair of two inputs, normally with coloured plastic rings around the inputs. They are very common on home stereos. They are also found in some car models, paticularly some French models, such as Renaults, Peugeots and Citroens.

If you have either of these inputs you can connect your music devices using one of our RCA (R/L) Aux Input Cables. Unfortunately at present this item can only be shipped from the UK.

Using An Aux Input Cable

To use an Aux Input cable, you simply plug one end into your iPod / mp3 player or phone and the other end into your Aux socket. Then you place your stereo into Aux mode and click play on your device. Turn up the volume on both and you should hear all your music through the stereo speakers!
